Students’ Return to HSS

The following is the Re-entry plan for Hazelton Secondary School students.  These rules are based off Dr. Bonnie Henry of the provincial health office and the ministry’s safety protocols.  Regardless of personal beliefs, we ask that you respect the rights of others and follow the physical distancing rules as laid out by Dr. Henry and the ministry.  At HSS, we take our students’ and staff’s safety very seriously.  Failure to follow these rules will result in students being sent home where they will continue their learning remotely.

Entering the building

  • A schedule of which students will attend HSS on which days is being developed and will be issued to student, guardians and staff prior to June 1st. This will include a bus schedule.
  • While students are on the bus, they will be assigned seating that will be based on physical distancing rules.
  • Students who are being dropped off by their parents must first be sure that they are scheduled to be at HSS that day and will be dropped off in the student parking lot
  • Students will only enter from the front doors
    • Students will be met by teachers as they enter the school
    • They will be brought to a pre-designated washroom by their teacher where they will wash their hands one at a time
    • Student will then be taken directly to their pre-designated classroom by their teacher once they have got off the bus and washed their hands
    • Classrooms to be used will be rm. 101, 106, 107, 109, 152, 160 and 166. These rooms all have either sinks for washing hands or hand sanitizer station
    • Students will not be allowed to go to their lockers. Lockers have been cleaned out and are closed for the year

Classrooms

  • Students will sign into the room they are in
  • Classrooms will be arranged so that each desk follows the physical distancing guidelines
  • Students will work on a day schedule outlining their plan for the day.
  • Students will be responsible for bringing their own school supplies (no sharing school supplies). If a student does not have a pencil or a pen, one can be provided to them by their teacher
  • Students will be in one class for the entire day. Each class will be given specific times for eating lunch, as well as going outside
  • Classes will be broken up according to grade as much as possible (the following is subject to change based on numbers of students in each grade)
    • Grades 8 and 9 will be in one room. Will continue to work on their “points” activities
    • Grades 10 and 11 will be in their own rooms. Will continue to work on “subject based” classes

  • Floors will be marked to help allow students to maintain a 2 metre distance from other people
  • Students will not be allowed to go to their lockers
  • Only 1 student per washroom at a time
  • When students go to the washroom, they are to call the office. The office will instruct the student which washroom is available and the student will use that washroom
  • When the student has returned to class, they are to contact the office to inform them of their return. The office will then dispatch our surface cleaner to give the washroom a wipe for the next student who may need to use it

  • Students will not be allowed to wander the halls or leave their classroom during lunch unless accompanied by their teacher

Locker Clean Out

As we continue with our rollout for student work, things are starting to settle a bit here at HSS to the point that we can now start to allow parents to come to the school to collect the things from their children’s lockers. If you would like to do so, we ask that you call the school in advance and arrange a time in which you can come and collect their things. We have staff who will go to the lockers and collect the materials and for this reason, as well as our policy on social distancing, we will not be accepting cold calls into the school, please do not just drop in. Parents are to call between 9AM and 1:30PM and arrange a time you will be by to pick up your child’s things. It will be placed in a bin outside our school so parents can come and pick it up safely. If you are unable to come to the school, please call the school directly at 250-842-5214 and we can make alternative arrangements. Thank you to everyone for your patience and hope everyone remains safe and healthy.

Hazelton Secondary Parent Advisory Council

Every school has a PAC, a Parent Advisory Council, where you as a parent, can have your voice heard regarding the education of your children.
It is no different at Hazelton Secondary school: we also have a PAC.

It is worth everybody’s while to attend PAC meetings, to stay informed about school matters, upcoming need for help from parents or discussions about concerns and dreams for our school.
Because a school is not just a building where we learn math, English, Gitxsan or socials.
It’s a place where we learn about life, about friendship, about working and playing together, about our strengths and weaknesses and how to overcome adversity.
It’s a place where we grow from children into adults.

Please take note of our new PAC Members:

Chair: Helene Paranich
Vice Chair: Arveen Vij
Treasurer: Andrea Vickers
Secretary: Maurice Yee

And make some time in your schedule to attend the next PAC meeting, which is scheduled for January 17th at 5:30 pm.
We hope to see you there!
